In Class Today 1-11-12
* Students took the last of Chem mini tests.
* After the test all classes went into the lab part of the classroom. A few students, and they were few and far between, participated in the Let There Be Light lab. The rest failed to read through the lab, measure out the liquids according to the materials list, and therefore did not produce the proper reaction. They, thus, did not do the lab. So, great you all brought the lab sheet. Not great, that you didn't either read it or follow it.

Assignments 1-11-12
* Students in class periods 4, 5, & 6 should bring all of their Chem materials to class on Thursday and Friday.
* Students in class period 8 & 9 should bring all of their Chem materials on Friday as I won't see them on Thursday due to SHS testing.

In Class Today 1-10-12
* It was Thermodynamics Lab day! Amazingly everyone remember their lab packets (see I told you you could do it)! Though I am not sure how many students read through the procedures. Most groups got to the part of using the phenol red. If there is time in the future we can try to complete the rest, but I can guarantee it.

Assignments 1-10-12
* Wednesday is Let There be Light lab day. Be sure to read through this lab procedure.
* Before the lab, students will take their last Chem mini test. It will cover balancing equations, the 4 types of reactions, and the material covering thermodynamics and rates of reactions. It is mainly multiple choice with some writing with the balancing equations.

In Class Today 1-9-12
* Students who completed the additional Balancing Equations problems on time, received back their work.
* Any very late Family Traits labs were also returned to students.
* Students received the lab packets for the Chemistry In The Bag lab and the Let There Be Light lab. Students MUST read these ahead of the lab day and come in prepared to go. The Chemistry In The Bag will be done on Tuesday and the Let There Be Light on Wednesday. Anyone in class today, who does not come in with their copy of the lab on the lab day, will not be participating. So don't lose yours.

Rates of Reaction.pdf
* The majority of class was spent discussing energy, endo/exo/iso thermic reactions, and all other related information covered in Chapter 2/Section 4.

Assignments 1-9-12
* For Tuesday, read through the Chemistry In The Bag lab.
        > Dress accordingly to lab day requirements.
* Reminder that on Wednesday there is a mini test covering Balancing Equations, Types of Reactions, and Thermodynamics (what we covered today).

In Class Today 1-6-12
(Dr. B. was absent today.)
* On Thursday, Dr. B. had listed on the agenda that students needed to brings all of their outlines and class notes to class. Lately, students have not been coming to class with all of the necessary materials. With these outlines and notes students worked on a crossword puzzle covering concepts in Chapters 1 and 2 (not included the last outline assigned). Only students who add done the Chapter 2/Section 3 outline on time were allowed to work with a partner on the puzzle.
        > Dr. B. scored the puzzle (her daughter picked up the papers) and scores were posted by Saturday night. Wow, a lot of students were very unprepared. Daily review of material is required!

Assignments 1-6-12
* There are no new assignments.

In Class Today 1-5-12
* All classes have now gone over the Chemical Bonding mini test. (This one was multiple choice.) [One class needed to today.]
* All classes received back their Counting Atoms & Bonding mini test. All answers were reviewed. (This one was written.)
* Nearly all classes received back their Family Traits lab. Responses were reviewed. The delay in returning this was in the number of students who did not turn it in even with a December 1st due date.
* Based on a number of students using radioactivity as a term on their Chemistry Binder Cover, and using it incorrectly, plus radioactivity's use in determining the age of fossil (in our next unit), all classes viewed the Brain Pop video titled Radioactivity. Additional discussion occurred in all classes. * Most classes also viewed the Brain Pop video Heat. The concept of heat and thermodynamics is in our current reading assignment. If your class did not watch it please view it online at BrainPop.com.
* Those students who needed to do additional balancing equations problems should have turned in that assignment.

In Class Today 1-3-12
* We welcomed in the new calendar year by continuing with our Chemistry topics of the academic year - reactions.
* Students received back their Balancing Equations worksheet turned in the last Friday. All of the responses were reviewed. Dr. B. was disappointed by the number of students who did not originally follow the pattern in balancing equations., as well as the number of students who did not do the original assignment at all. Consequently, any student receiving a score of 3 out of 5 or less, is assigned problems 1 through 20, odd numbered problems. All work must be shown and this assignment is due Thursday.
* Class discussions then went to the 4 Types of Reactions homework. Synthesis and Decomposition reactions were reviewed.

Assignments 1-3-12
* As described above, students who need to do additional balancing equation problems, the assignment is due Thursday.
* A number of students still have not turned in the Family Traits. This MUST be in to Dr. B. by Thursday, before school, to obtain any credit.

* Thursday will be another mini test. This will cover counting atoms and bonding. It will be all written.
* Anyone leaving early during this week for winter vacation MUST see Dr. B. to get the assignments for over break.

In Class Today 12-9-11
* In all classes we went over the 3 combinations of atoms that were assigned last night.
* All classes started doing samples of covalent bonding. The 2 situations that were shown were C with H (later one hydrogen was replaced with a halogen) and 2 oxygens atoms.

Assignments 12-9-11
* To continue practicing ionic bonding it is suggested that students try to show the bonding between an alkali metal and nitrogen, an alkaline earth metal and nitrogen, and an element from boron's family and nitrogen. That would pretty much take care of the ionic bonding options.
* To practice covalent bonding students should try 2 nitrogen atoms, then advance to the bonding in water, and carbon with 2 oxygens. If someone is feeling really adventurous try carbon with 2 hydrogens with 1 oxygen.
* R.H. Chapter 2/Section 1. This is a new reading packet. If you want to outline that would be terrific but not assigned.
Holt Chp 2-Section 1>4.pdf
* Reminder that there is a 9 question mini test on Monday. See earlier listing for more info. Doing the reading that is assigned would be a good review!!!

        >>> For students missing Wednesday's class because of the Band Rehearsal at SHS, Dr. B. will be online Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 8:30. Students need to go to the Brontman Conference on First Class and go to the Discussion icon. There you will find that you can send an email to the conference. Your question MUST be written in the subject line. I will respond to student questions from band students who will be missing my 4th or 5th period classes ONLY. Others on the team are welcome to view the information exchange but you should save your questions for class on Wednesday.

Homework 11-14-11
* There are no new homework assignments.

In Class Today 11-10-11
* It was a very class time today because of the half day schedule.
* Our discussion centered on the last section of the Glencoe Chapter 1 reading, Dot Diagrams. As I mentioned, you will often see these diagrams referred to as Lewis Dot Diagrams, after Gilbert Lewis who first desgined them.
Electron Dot Diagram Instructions.pdf

* It is highly recommended that students create sort of Chem flash cards. Take a standard 3 X 5 note card, cut it in half making 2 sections 3 X 2.5 each.
        > Next create electron configurations, for the first 20 elements, on note cards. Include the element’s symbol, in one of the upper corners, put the number of protons in the center as the nucleus, draw rings around the nucleus for the shells, and put the electrons in their appropriate shells.
        > On the back side of the card, create a Dot Diagram for the same element.
        > These will be excellent review tools.
* SHS Math students should check their First Class email for a copy of the notes. One of your math classmates was suppose to tell you of this!!

Assignments 11-10-11
* There are no new assignments. Students should be reviewing material from the Study Guide. Plan on this Mid-Unit test Thursday. Students are the chorus rehearsal will have to make other arrangements, most likely after school.
* Assignments due Monday are listed in yesterday's section.

In Class Today 11-9-11
* The majority of the class time was spent on electron shells, their location, the number of electrons they can hold, and how the electrons move. Students are only responsible for being able to create electron filling diagrams for the first 20 elements. Remember when you create your filling diagrams to space the electrons are far away from each other as you can.

Assignments 11-9-11
* R.H.O. Holt Chapter 5/Section 1 for Monday, November 14th. For information that you read and highlight, but already have in another outline, you do not need to also have in this outline. If you want the info in two places, that's great, but not required.
* R.H. ONLY Holt Chapter 5/Section 2 for Monday, November 14th. Pay close attention to information about electrons that are characteristic of families.

Holt-Intro to Matter-Chp 5-Sec1&2.pdf

* Stevenson math students: I will send you a pdf of the material we cover in class on Thursday that you will miss because of our half day schedule. This will go to your First Class account.

In Class Today 11-8-11
* Students received the following items back: What Are Elements? packet, Atom Board packet, and Atomic Structure/Isotopes/Forces quiz. Also, period 5 students received their Scientific Method Unit Binder Order rubric. Common errors were reviewed.
* Students were informed about an opportunity to take a make up quiz on the same topics as above. This quiz will also be worth 7 points, as was the previous one. Students have some requirements to complete in order to be allowed to take the make up.
        >> Make up quiz pre-entrance ticket: Students must write out corrected answers from their quiz, showing all work, being specific about what any numbers mean, and identifying where they got this information. Information sources include the section reading, the atom board packet sections, flipbook, or class notes. Specifics from each of these is required. These corrected answers must be stapled to the back of your original quiz. These requirements were further discussed in class.
        >> The pre-entrance ticket MUST be to Dr. B. by 7:35 Wednesday morning. Dr. B. will review the thoroughness of the work and notify students as to their acceptance into the make quiz.
        >> The make up quiz is after school on Wednesday. It is all written!
* All classes used the rest of the class period to review isotopes and ions using the atom boards and some challenge problems. Every student was provided with their own questions to answer, related to the atom their group created.

Assignments 11-8-11
* There are no new assignments.

In Class Today 11-7-11
* The "What Are Elements?" was reviewed and turned in. Most students indicated that it was pretty easy and they would like me to score it for points.
* Using the students' Periodic Tables and their outline of the last section assigned, called Elements, we discussed the construction of the Periodic Table. Special emphasis was placed on identifying metal, nonmetals, and metalloids. In addition, students were introduced to Families and Rows, plus family names and characteristics.

* Students received back their Hypothesis reinforcement assignment. Common errors were discussed.
* Students submitted their unit binder.
* The first reading packet of the year was handed out. Students were introduced to the Read, highlight and outline method (R.H.O.) for outlining scientific reading material. Read a portion at a time. Ask yourself a couple of questions; was there something in the reading that you didn't know before, or was a new concept introduced/explained, or was a vocab word defined, or some other important. For the answers to each of those highlight the part of the reading that contained the info. Continue on with reading followed by highlighting. After the entire assignment is read and highlighted create your outline. You do not have to go in the exact order of the book. Sometimes you need to bring pieces of info from different parts of the reading into a common outline part. You can use a traditional format or bullet noting. Above all remember to use organization and indentions to show the organization. The first section was of the packet was assigned and is due Monday.
Chem Intro-Sec 1&2-1112.pdf
